All Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears. When the kitten is about 21 days old, the ears will start to fold or they will not. If they do not fold at this time then they will never fold. If they do fold then they carry the folded ear gene. If they do not fold, they do not carry the gene, and these "Straight eared" Scottish fold cats can not reproduce folded eared kittens in their offspring unless bred to a folded eared cat. Many people have tried to categorize the ears of folds. Some terms used most frequently are single fold, double fold, and triple fold. These terms refer to the number of bends the ear makes. Below we have pictures of the three.
